Where Good Neighbors and Good Servicemen Meet

Emergency Service

Before you call, ask yourself:

  • Will the repair wait? If you have two AC systems, for example, could you sleep in a different part of the house? Do you have access to a window unit for your bedroom? Can you spend the night with friends?
  • Are you willing to pay extra for the service?
  • Will you need replacement parts? If so, does the repairman have the parts? Supply houses will open on an emergency basis for a wholesale price of about $75. Are you prepared to pay this charge as well?
  • What if you need a part that has to be ordered? Your repair will wait, and you will still pay emergency service charges. Is that acceptable?
  • I suggest you talk directly to your serviceman—not to a secretary. Give all the information you can, including the brand of equipment. Let him assess your repair situation, and then decide. If he already has the anticipated parts, that'll reduce the cost.
